In 2022, UNICEF Canada partnered with several youth advocates to develop a written piece and subsequent video titled “A Letter to Canada from the Young Leaders of Today”.
Young people from across the country wrote about how they are experiencing the impacts of climate change in their communities and the actions they have taken. They urge leaders to join them in the fight for a better future. The letter is featured in the Canadian Companion to Report Card 17.
Canada has relatively low levels of air pollution – the 8th lowest among 43 countries covered by the Report Card.
In the top third of countries in terms of lowest percentages of children (around 2 per cent) with elevated levels of lead in their blood.
Canada emits high levels of CO2 (based on consumption) – more than 15 metric tonnes per person per year – the 3rd highest out of 43 countries.
If all people in the world consumed at the same rate as the average person in Canada, we would need 5 earths to sustain this consumption.
